David Wells – Professional kayaker

David hails from Maine and enjoys exploration. He has been in the outdoor guiding industry for over a decade, an outdoor educator and explorer. Currently David’s main passion is expedition kayaking. Last year he was a member of the Summer Rains Tour, which successfully paddled 18 rivers with a first descent from the border of Lesetho and South Africa on the Mkomazana River.

  1. What animal would be most terrifying if it could speak?

    Gabon Viper

  2. What do you appreciate most in your friends?

    A sense of global humor!  

  3. What song would you choose as your “entrance” song, to announce you?

  4. What is the dumbest way you’ve been injured?

    I have broken my Humerus and my L1 + L2 vertebrae on separate occasions on separate continents due untied shoe laces at the top of staircases. I am trying to make the switch to Velcro...

  5. If you had a billboard, what would it say to represent you?

    Go See Africa!

  6. Who or what inspires you?

    The explorerers Hendri Coetzee and Peter Meredith. Hendri’s book “Living the Best Day Ever” is a must read for anyone interested in exploration, leadership, and the nature of humanity.  

  7. What are the five things you cannot do without?

    Clean freeflowing rivers. Dry socks. Audiobooks. Manu Chao. A Postive Attitude. 

  8. What is your favorite breakfast meal?

    Cold Pizza or Baked beans (honestly try it!)

  9. If you came with a warning label what would it say?

    Tries everything twice (see untied shoe laces) 

  10. If you could time travel, when/where would you go?

    Back to the White Nile before 2011 in order to paddle Bujagali Falls again! This was before the headwaters of the White Nile was flooded by the funding of the World Bank which resulted in the destruction of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

David also enjoys canyoneering, backpacking, jungle camping and plain outdoor fun! When bushwhacking into rivers for self-support trips, ounces equal pounds and David says that Food for the Sole lifts his spirits as well as gives him healthy energy to enjoy the experience.
